Biography

William Davies joined the University of Southampton in 2001 as a research fellow, focusing on the S2AGES project. He became a Lecturer in September 2006 and progressed to Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in 2013, and then to Professor in 2020. His research interests center on the mobility, dispersal, and interaction of late Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens, applying a broad ecological and climatic framework to understand the extinction of Neanderthals and the arrival of Homo sapiens in Europe. He has been involved in NERC-funded projects that have obtained reliable radiocarbon dates for diagnostic artefacts from Eastern and Western Europe, enhancing the chronological understanding of the archaeological record between 50,000 and 20,000 years ago. Additionally, he participated in the RESET consortium, providing insights into Neanderthal sites across Europe, and led a Leverhulme Trust funded project called DEPICT, which explored innovations in ceramic technology spanning 40,000 to 10,000 years ago. His work aims to reconstruct past environments and understand how Palaeolithic hunter-gatherers responded to climatic change. William also actively participates in teaching, integrating various perspectives within anthropology and focusing on palaeoecological reconstructions and palaeoanthropological methods.
