Biography

Professor Detmold obtained his PhD from the University of Adelaide in Australia and joined the MIT physics faculty in 2012, with appointments at the College of William and Mary and the University of Washington. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society. His research focuses on strong interaction dynamics in theoretical particle and nuclear physics, utilizing analytic methods and supercomputers to solve complex equations in quantum chromodynamics (QCD). His work aims to describe the strong interaction and understand the emergence of hadrons and nuclei relevant to the underlying principles of the Standard Model of particle physics. Detmold seeks to determine the properties of interactions within systems and confront experimental results to make predictions about the conditions in the interior of neutron stars and other regimes. Notably, he is also involved in research pertaining to dark matter.
