Professor Doolittle received his Ph.D. in 1979 from the University of Oklahoma and joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin in 1981 after teaching at Mississippi State University. He has served as both an undergraduate advisor and a graduate advisor, earning the Outstanding Graduate Advisor Award from UT in 2004. Doolittle was a visiting professor at Brown University in 1997 and a Fulbright Senior Specialist in Sweden in 2007. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he has received numerous awards including distinguished scholarships from the Association of American Geographers and was honored with an honorary doctorate from Stockholm University. His teaching focuses on topics such as Field Techniques, landscapes of Mexico and the Caribbean, historical geography of the American Southwest, and sustainable agricultural practices. His research interests encompass agricultural technologies and landscapes in arid regions, especially in the American Southwest and Mexico. He is currently investigating the transfer of water control knowledge from Renaissance Spain to Viceregal Mexico. Doolittle is the author of more than 70 publications, including four books on prehistoric agriculture and irrigation in North America.
