Biography

William Eaton conducts epidemiologic research to discover risk factors for psychiatric disorders such as depression, schizophrenia, anxiety, and cognitive decline. He uses an epidemiologic framework to explain the risk factors, natural history, and consequences of major mental disorders. His work emphasizes a sociological approach to understanding the occurrence of what are generally labeled as psychiatric disorders. Eaton's research in psychiatric epidemiology includes investigations into the incidence and natural history of schizophrenia, informed by data from psychiatric case registers across various locations worldwide. He has also focused on the epidemiology of autoimmune diseases and their relationship to the risk of autism, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Currently, he leads a double-blind randomized controlled trial examining gluten withdrawal as a treatment for schizophrenia in individuals with antibodies to gluten. Notably, his research has shown significant links between major depressive disorders and new occurrences of serious physical conditions like type 2 diabetes and heart attack, which he explores through long-term follow-up studies.
