Dr. William Goddard

Biography

William Goddard is the Charles Mary Ferkel Professor at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), specializing in Chemistry, Materials Science, and Applied Physics. He completed his Bachelor of Science at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1960 and earned his Ph.D. from Caltech in 1965. His research encompasses a wide range of topics, including quantum chemistry, molecular dynamics, and statistical physics, focusing on the simulation design of biological, polymer, ceramic, and metal systems. Professor Goddard has held various academic positions at Caltech since 1967, transitioning through roles from Assistant Professor to his current status as Professor. His pioneering work has significantly advanced the understanding of reaction mechanisms in both homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis, as well as the prediction of protein structure and function. A key aspect of his research is the development of new theories and methods, along with the creation of novel software that integrates Quantum Mechanics with longer length scales. This integration facilitates a finer understanding of material properties and behaviors without relying solely on empirical data.
