Biography

William Hébert is an Associate Professor in the Department of Law and Legal Studies at Carleton University. He is a trained social-cultural anthropologist with a focus on legal medical anthropology, critical criminology, and gender and sexuality studies. His research addresses the conditions and limitations of inclusion, particularly concerning marginalized populations and their everyday experiences. Over the past decade, Hébert has approached these subjects through qualitative inquiry, engaging in long-term ethnographic fieldwork and community-based research. Hébert's ongoing research includes examining the impacts of recent trans correctional reforms within Canada’s sex-segregated prison system and exploring the legal challenges faced by trans, Two-Spirit, and non-binary people. His work has involved collaboration on projects surrounding access to healthcare for elderly trans individuals and the wellbeing of trans youth. Hébert is also an active mentor for undergraduate and graduate students, guiding those interested in socially impactful qualitative research.
