Biography

William Hsiao joined the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University as an associate professor in September 2020. He is also an affiliated scientist at the BC Centre for Disease Control Public Health Laboratory and a genomic consultant for the BC Ministry of Agriculture. Previously, he served for eight years as chief bioinformatician and senior scientist at BCCDC PHL and was a clinical associate professor at the University of British Columbia. Hsiao earned his PhD in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry from Simon Fraser University and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute for Genome Sciences at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. His research focuses on microbial genomics and metagenomics, emphasizing data science methodologies to improve public health data sharing and integration. Hsiao directs the Public Health Bioinformatics Group, developing tools and ontologies for improved data analysis in public health contexts. He champions open science principles and collaborates across various disciplines to tackle public health challenges. Hsiao teaches workshops related to bioinformatics and serves as a Principal Investigator at the Centre for Infectious Disease Genomics and Health.
