Biography

William T. Joines earned a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1959, followed by a Master of Science and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Duke University in 1961 and 1964, respectively. He served four years in the United States Air Force as an airborne radar technician before joining Duke University as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering in 1966. He was promoted to Associate Professor in 1968 and appointed Full Professor in 1979. His research focuses on electromagnetic field wave interactions and materials structures, contributing significantly to the fields of microwave technology and antennas. Joines has supervised the research of over 60 graduate students, fostering future generations of engineers and researchers. He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE and has been recognized with awards such as the Outstanding Engineering Educator Award from the IEEE and the Scientific Technical Achievement Award from the Environmental Protection Agency, reflecting his impactful career as an educator and researcher. Joines is also a member of various honor societies including Tau Beta Pi and Eta Kappa Nu.
