Biography

William Kelly is a Senior Lecturer in Geospatial Science at the University of Glasgow. He is the programme convenor for MSc degree programmes focusing on surveying, mapping, GIS, and cartography. William earned his BSc(Hons) in Geographic Information and Mapping Sciences from the University of Glasgow in 2008. He has substantial experience in the private sector, where he worked for eight years in various capacities across Europe, the Arctic, the Middle East, Africa, and the Americas, primarily in the oil, gas, and renewable energy sectors. Throughout his career, he has taken on supervisory roles in significant projects, including overseeing operations at some of the world's largest tidal energy plants and various wind farms. Since joining the University of Glasgow in 2016, he has developed an interest in geospatial surveying, with particular focus on data quality, laser scanning, and digital twins. His pedagogical research includes embedding geospatial curricula and promoting lifelong learning through work-based experiences. He has received various accolades, including a postgraduate certificate in Academic Practice in 2018 and a Master of Education in 2023. He is a member of several professional accreditation bodies and chairs CICES Scotland while actively working to enhance geospatial learning and teaching practices in higher education.
