Biography

William M. Landes is the Clifton R. Musser Professor Emeritus of Law and Economics at the University of Chicago Law School, where he has been a faculty member since 1974. He served as the Clifton R. Musser Professor of Law and Economics from 1992 to 2009. Landes received his BA from Columbia College in 1960 and earned his PhD in Economics from Columbia University in 1966. His academic work extensively covers the application of economics and quantitative methods to law, particularly in the areas of legal institutions, torts, intellectual property, judicial behavior, and legal decision-making. Landes has held significant editorial positions including Editor of the Journal of Law and Economics from 1975 to 1991 and the Journal of Legal Studies from 1991 to 2000. He has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2008 and served as President of the American Law and Economics Association from 1992 to 1993. Landes co-founded Lexecon, now known as Compass Lexecon, in 1977, alongside renowned economists Richard Posner and Andrew M. Rosenfield.
