Biography

Bill Linwood studied under renowned percussionist George Gaber at Indiana University and continued his studies with Cloyd Duff of the Cleveland Orchestra and Kurt-Hans Goedicke from the London Symphony Orchestra. He served as Principal Timpani for the Victoria Symphony starting in 1982 and became a Percussion Instructor at the University of Victoria in 2000. His contributions include leading the University of Victoria Percussion Ensemble through significant performances such as the Canadian premiere of George Antheil’s Ballet Mécanique and a program dedicated entirely to the works of Edgard Varèse in collaboration with Montreal’s Quasar Quartet. Linwood offers masterclasses and clinics across Canada and is the percussion instructor for the Pacific Region International Summer Music Academy in Powell River. He is also the Artistic Director of Aventa, an acclaimed Canadian new music ensemble. Notable conducting highlights include the North American premiere of Pierre Boulez’s Dérive II and the Australian premiere of Gavin Bryars’ opera Marilyn Forever. For his dedication to Canadian music, he was named a CMC Ambassador as part of the Canadian Music Centre’s 50th anniversary.
