Dr. William Maley

Biography

Emeritus Professor William Maley served as a Professor of Diplomacy at the Australian National University from 2003 to 2021. He was the Foundation Director of the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy from July 1, 2003, to December 31, 2014. Maley has taught at the School of Politics at the University College, University of New South Wales, and the Australian Defence Force Academy, and has held visiting professorships and fellowships at institutions including the Russian Diplomatic Academy, the University of Strathclyde, and the Refugee Studies Programme at Oxford University. He has served as a barrister at the High Court of Australia and has taken on roles such as Vice-President of the Refugee Council of Australia and a member of the Australian Committee for Security Cooperation in Asia-Pacific (CSCAP). Maley served as Review Editor for the Australian Journal of Political Science and has been on the editorial boards of various journals, including Global Responsibility to Protect and the Hague Journal on Diplomacy. He was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2002 and has been elected as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia (FASSA) in 2009 and the Australian Institute of International Affairs (FAIIA) in 2019.
