Professor Dr. William Mccarthy

Biography

William McCarthy is a Professor in the Department of Accounting Information Systems at Michigan State University. His research interests focus on the development of knowledge-based systems, object-oriented approaches, and database theories related to accounting systems. He is particularly known for his seminal contributions to REA (Resource-Event-Agent) accounting systems, having received the Seminal Contribution Award from the American Accounting Association in 1996 for his influential paper. His current research includes the development of enterprise ontologies and models for open value networks in the context of blockchain environments. McCarthy has authored a research monograph published by the American Accounting Association on the REA accounting model and continues to contribute significantly to teaching, having received multiple awards for his approaches in semantic modeling for accounting education. He has supervised numerous doctoral dissertations, many of which have won national awards, and has been recognized with various teaching awards.
