Bill Mitch received a B.A. in Anthropology with a focus on Archaeology from Harvard University in 1993. He studied and excavated Mayan sites in Belize and surveyed sites dating back to 2,000 B.C. in Louisiana. He switched fields to earn a M.S. degree in Civil Environmental Engineering from UC Berkeley. He worked for three years in environmental consulting and obtained his P.E. license in Civil Engineering in California. Bill won the NSF CAREER Award in 2007 and joined Stanford University as an associate professor in 2013. His research focuses on the connections between public health and engineering sustainability, examining issues like emerging carcinogens, global warming impacts on ocean chemistry, persistent organic pollutants, sustainable wastewater recycling, and carbon sequestration. He has played an advisory role for student organizations and was elected Vice-Chair of the 4th Disinfection Byproducts Gordon Conference in 2015.
