William Murphy is a professor with a joint appointment at Texas A&M University College of Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on evolutionary biology, employing comparative genomic approaches to explore adaptation, speciation, and diversification in mammals. His work connects genotype to phenotype and includes the generation and application of T2T genome assemblies, which enhance genetic mapping resolution. He is particularly interested in studying the role of structural variation in speciation and diversification among felids and other mammal clades. He joined the department in 2023. Murphy earned his B.S. in Biological Sciences from Illinois State University in 1992 and a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University of Tulsa in 1997. He also completed postdoctoral work in Comparative Genomics at the Laboratory of Genomic Diversity at the National Cancer Institute from 1997 to 2003.
