Biography

William Newsome is the Harman Family Provostial Professor in Neurobiology at Stanford University and the founding director of the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute. He obtained his B.S. degree in physics from Stetson University and Ph.D. in biology from the California Institute of Technology. As a leading investigator in systems cognitive neuroscience, Newsome has made significant contributions to understanding the neural mechanisms underlying visual perception and decision-making processes. He has received numerous awards, including the Rank Prize in Optoelectronics, the Spencer Award, and the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award from the American Psychological Association. His distinguished lectureships include the 13th Annual Marr Lecture at the University of Cambridge and the 9th Annual Brenda Milner Lecture at McGill University. A member of the National Academy of Sciences since 2000, he was also elected to the American Philosophical Society in 2011. Newsome co-chaired the NIH BRAIN working group, establishing a national plan for neuroscience research in the United States. His teaching contributions have been recognized by several awards from Stanford University. His research goals focus on understanding how neuronal processes mediate visual perception and behavior.
