Biography

William Oh is the Sylvia Kay Hassenfeld Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics at Brown University, specializing in Neonatology. With a career spanning over 30 years, he has published more than 400 papers in peer-reviewed journals. As a former Principal Investigator of the NICHD-funded Neonatal Research Network, Dr. Oh has been actively involved in developing intervention strategies to improve outcomes for low birth weight infants. His research has notably focused on several neonatal topics, including Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) and the consequences of infants born to diabetic mothers. Through his research, he demonstrated that IUGR fetuses exhibit reduced hepatic glycogen content, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia during the neonatal period. His studies also revealed that fetal hyperinsulinemia is a significant risk factor for complications in newborns born large due to diabetes. He has evaluated interventions utilizing surfactant and inhaled nitric oxide to prevent chronic lung disease in infants. His funded research has included significant projects such as the NICHD Offspring of Diabetic Mothers study.
