Biography

William Philpott joined the Department of War Studies as a lecturer in September 2001 and became a Professor of the History of Warfare in 2011. He was previously a member of the department from 1991 to 1992 as a postdoctoral research fellow, working on a collaborative research project investigating British civil-military relations from 1856 to 1990. Philpott is the President of the British Commission for Military History and serves as a councillor with the National Army Museum. He is also the Honorary Secretary of the Army Records Society and chairs the University of London’s Military Education Committee. He convenes the Institute of Historical Research’s military history research seminar and is on the editorial board of the British Journal for Military History, as well as being a series editor for the Palgrave monograph series on Studies in Military Strategic History. His research focuses on military international history during the early twentieth century, with current interests in World War I military history at strategic, operational, and tactical levels, particularly regarding the role of France and the French army during the war. Philpott teaches various undergraduate and postgraduate courses related to war and peace, and supervises PhD research in areas including command and logistics in World War I, and British and French military strategies.
