Biography

William Pope.L (1955-2023) was an acclaimed and prolific interdisciplinary artist known for his provocative performances and unique artistic vision. He was the recipient of prestigious grants and awards, including the Art Fund Grant, Guggenheim Fellowship, and NEA fellowship. Pope.L had his works represented in prominent galleries, such as Mitchell-Innes & Nash in New York and Susanne Vielmetter in Los Angeles. He gained significant recognition for his pieces included in the Whitney Biennial in 2002 and 2017, and won the Bucksbaum Award for his contributions to the art world. Pope.L was perhaps best known for his decades-long series of crawls across New York City, a striking commentary on societal issues. His recent project, 'Escape,' an adaptation of a nineteenth-century play by abolitionist William Wells Brown, was staged at the Art Institute of Chicago. Before his passing, he was a professor in the Visual Arts department at the University of Chicago and also served as a lecturer in Theater and Rhetoric at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine, where he inspired students with his unique artistic perspective. He earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University.
