Biography

William Powrie is a Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at the University of Southampton and served as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and the Environment from 2010 to 2018. His expertise encompasses geotechnical aspects of transport infrastructure and sustainable waste resource management. Elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2009, he is recognized for his significant contributions to the field. Powrie has worked on numerous major projects, including the A55 Conwy Crossing and the extension of the Jubilee Line. He is involved in defining and managing geotechnical concerns for HS2 and has co-authored major reports focusing on groundwater control and retaining wall design. As an Associate Editor of the Canadian Geotechnical Journal and an Honorary Editor for the ICE journal Geotechnical Engineering, he also provides consulting services to groundwater specialists. Powrie's research includes landfill engineering and the development of sound scientific foundations for practices in waste management. He promotes environmental protection and is dedicated to recycling and reducing pollution. Outside of academia, he enjoys cycling and is active in his local community, including organist duties at St Edward's Church in Netley Abbey.
