Dr. William Rawlinson

Biography

Prof Bill Rawlinson is a Senior Medical Virologist and the Director of Virology at South Eastern Sydney and Illawarra Health Service. He leads the virology reference laboratory and the virology clinical trials unit. His laboratory is a Therapeutic Goods Administration licensed facility specializing in testing organ donors for blood borne viruses and conducting virology research. Prof Rawlinson completed his MBBS and BSc(Med) at the University of Sydney in 1983, followed by specialty training in Infectious Diseases and Virology, earning fellowships from the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and the Royal College of Pathologists Australasia. He obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge in 1994, focusing on human and murine cytomegalovirus genomes. His research expertise includes herpes viruses, hepatitis viruses, enteroviruses, and respiratory viruses. Prof Rawlinson has contributed significantly to the development of new testing algorithms for common viral illnesses and has authored unique studies on congenital CMV and endogenous viruses related to cancer. He also serves on advisory boards for NSW and Commonwealth Departments of Health.
