Biography

William J. Reese is a Vilas Research Professor and the Carl F. Kaestle WARF Professor in the Department of Educational Policy Studies and History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is a member of the National Academy of Education and a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association. Reese teaches courses at both undergraduate and graduate levels focusing on the history of American education, including childhood and adolescence. His influential books include 'Power and Promise: School Reform Grassroots Movements in the Progressive Era,' 'Origins of the American High School,' and 'America’s Public Schools: A Common School in the Era of No Child Left Behind.' His current research projects explore the history of public schools in Washington, D.C. and the history of child prodigies. Reese received his PhD in Educational Policy Studies with a focus on History and Philosophy of Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1980, after obtaining an MA in History from Bowling Green State University in 1975 and a BA in History from Wilkes College in 1973.
