Biography

William Reppy, Jr. is the Charles L.B. Lowndes Professor Emeritus at Duke University School of Law. He was born in Oxnard, California, and received his A.B. in 1963 and J.D. in 1966 from Stanford University. Reppy began his professional career with judicial clerkships, first at the California Supreme Court and then the United States Supreme Court. He practiced law for several years in a private firm in Los Angeles before joining the faculty at Duke Law in 1971. Throughout his career, he has taught at various universities including those in California, Michigan, Washington, and North Carolina. His principal scholarly work focuses on animal law, marital property, and conflict laws. Additionally, he served for 12 years on the North Carolina General Statutes Commission and has been a frequent consultant for the California Law Revision Commission on issues pertaining to community property and succession law. Reppy actively participates in humane animal rights movements.
