Biography

Dr. Rhodes joined Georgia Tech in 1971 and significantly contributed to developing the Institute's strong program in optics. He served as Director of the Center for Optical Science and Engineering and also as Research Director at Georgia Tech Lorraine in Metz, France. From 1990 to 1991, he spent 18 months at the University of Colorado in Boulder as a Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering while managing a research program there. He holds degrees in physics (B.S. 1966) and electrical engineering (M.S. 1968, Ph.D. 1971) from Stanford University. During his early career, he emphasized the importance of travel and cultural exposure and has a background in a musically and technically inclined family. He has contributed to research in image formation, partially coherent optical systems, Fourier optics, information processing, telecommunications, and secure communication technology.
