Biography

William S. Ryan is an Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream, in the Department of Psychology at the University of Toronto, St. George. He teaches a variety of courses related to social personality psychology, health psychology, and industrial-organizational behavior. His teaching philosophy is heavily influenced by Self-Determination Theory (SDT), which emphasizes the importance of intrinsic motivation in learning and growth. Through his research, he focuses on social contexts and interactions that either support or hinder health and wellness, particularly among members of stigmatized groups in workplace and classroom settings. He actively collaborates with undergraduate students in his research lab, the WISH (Well-being, Identity, Stigma, & Health) lab. Ryan completed his Ph.D. in Social Psychology at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2017, where he also earned a Certificate in Interdisciplinary Emphasis in Quantitative Methods for the Social Sciences. Additionally, he holds a B.A. in Psychology from Smith College, awarded in 2009. As a teaching stream professor, he also supervises graduate students and postdoctoral scholars.
