Biography

William Shotyk completed his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture (Soil Science Chemistry) from the University of Guelph in 1981 and earned his Ph.D. in Geochemistry from the University of Western Ontario in 1986. His postdoctoral research included tenures at the University of California, Riverside, and the University of Western Ontario. He joined the Geological Institute at the University of Berne in Switzerland, where he completed his Habilitation in Geochemistry in 1995. In October 2000, he became a Professor at the University of Heidelberg, subsequently taking the role of Director of the Institute of Environmental Geochemistry. In October 2011, he joined the University of Alberta as a Professor in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences, specifically within the Department of Renewable Resources. He has been actively involved in the Land Reclamation International Graduate School program sponsored by NSERC CREATE. Shotyk has received several accolades, including the Philippe Duchaufour Medal from the European Geosciences Union in 2012 and has been recognized as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada in 2018. His research focuses on geochemistry, environmental change, and agricultural impacts on ecosystems.
