Biography

William E. Singhose is a Professor at the George W. Woodruff School of Mechanical Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. He joined Georgia Tech in 1998 as an Assistant Professor after serving as a Postdoctoral Associate at MIT. His research focuses on automation and mechatronics, with particular emphasis on vibration oscillation control, flexible dynamics, command generation, human-machine interfaces, and spacecraft control. His work aims to improve the performance of machines subjected to vibration during operation, such as cranes handling materials, where uncontrolled oscillations can pose safety hazards and slow operations. Singhose has developed control schemes which enable human operators to manage payload oscillations more effectively, employing simple models to capture essential dynamic effects and design commands that optimize machine operation. His innovative approaches have led to significant advancements in the control of silicon handling robots and automated manufacturing equipment. Furthermore, he has engaged in various projects, such as designing vibration absorbers and enhancing spacecraft thruster control.
