William Small received his doctorate in Interdisciplinary Studies from the Graduate Program at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in 2010. He completed postdoctoral training at the Department of Medicine (Division of AIDS) at UBC and the Australian National Centre for HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research at the University of New South Wales. In September 2012, he joined the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University as a Professor. His research focuses on social science methods to address public health challenges related to illicit drug users, specifically in HIV prevention interventions aiming to reduce drug-related harm. Current research employs ethno-spatial epidemiological methods to assess the impact of social, structural, and physical environments on HIV risk behaviors and treatment outcomes among illicit drug users. His interdisciplinary approach includes ethnographic observational fieldwork, in-depth interviews, and geo-spatial mapping, along with prospective epidemiological cohort studies involving various groups within the illicit drug-using population in Vancouver.
