Dr. William Swadling

Biography

William Swadling, MA (Oxon), LLM (Lond) is a Professor of Law and a Senior Law Fellow at Brasenose College, Oxford. He chairs the faculty's teaching groups in Restitution, Trusts, and Personal Property. Prior to his position at Oxford, he held roles at various universities, including University College London and Trinity College, Cambridge. Swadling is an editor of several academic works, including 'Quistclose Trust: Critical Essays'. His research particularly focuses on the intersection of trusts, property, and restitution. Noteworthy is his article on the landmark case Westdeutsche Landesbank Girozentrale v Islington LBC, which has been cited in English courts. He has contributed to major legal publications, such as Halsbury's Laws of England. Swadling has also held visiting professorships at prestigious institutions worldwide, including the University of Hamburg and the National University of Singapore. He is an academic associate of Essex Court Chambers and a Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne. Furthermore, he is an elected member of the American Law Institute and a member of the Chancery Bar Association.
