William Thomas is a postdoctoral research fellow in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Western Australia. He is part of the Batley Lab, which specializes in plant genomics, led by Professor Jacqueline Batley. His research focuses on the genetics of plant disease resistance, particularly in Brassica crops. William is interested in identifying novel resistance genes and exploring molecular mechanisms that underpin these resistances, as well as understanding the evolutionary dynamics of plant-pathogen interactions through genomics. His PhD research, supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation research scholarship, involved identifying candidate genes in canola (Brassica napus) that confer resistance to blackleg, a devastating fungal disease. He has also worked in the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. William teaches courses such as BIOL3364 - Evolutionary Processes and BIOL5542 - Conservation Genetics, and his expertise contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
