Biography

Wim M. van Rees is an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He obtained his BSc and MSc in Marine Technology from Delft University of Technology and earned his PhD from ETH Zurich in 2014. After his doctoral studies, he conducted postdoctoral research at the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences at Harvard University in 2015 and joined the MIT faculty in 2017. His accolades include being awarded the American Bureau of Shipping Career Development Chair in 2017, the Seagrant Doherty Professorship in Ocean Utilization in 2019, the Department of Energy Early Career Award in 2020, and the Army Research Office Early Career Award in 2021. His research focuses on developing and applying advanced numerical simulations to address issues related to bio-inspired propulsion and vortex dynamics, as well as exploring shape-changing structures for innovative applications in fluid flows and renewable energy harvesting.
