Professor Win Rampen holds the Chair in Energy Storage at the University of Edinburgh. He is the founder and Managing Director of Artemis Intelligent Power, a company he established in 1994 that pioneered the development of ultra-efficient controllable Digital Displacement® hydraulic technology. After growing up on a farm near Toronto, he trained as an engineer, and upon graduation, moved to the UK in 1978 to work with Professor Stephen Salter on wave power at the University of Edinburgh. It was here that he encountered Robert Clerk and radical hydraulic machines, which were intended for Salter Duck’s power take-off system. Following years as a lecturer in Canada during the 1980s, he returned to the University of Edinburgh to continue his work on advanced hydraulic machines required for capturing energy from waves as renewable energy sources. His efforts led to the development of early prototypes and culminated in his doctorate in 1993 and the founding of Artemis in 1994. Under Rampen’s leadership, Artemis grew significantly and was acquired by Mitsubishi in 2010. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Encouragement of Arts, Manufacturers and Commerce, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and the Royal Academy of Engineering, and has received several prestigious awards including the Joseph Bramah Medal in 2014 and the MacRobert Award from the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2015.
