Biography

Winson Peng holds a Ph.D. from the City University of Hong Kong and currently serves as a Professor in the Department of Communication at Michigan State University (MSU). He started as an Assistant Professor at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, from 2013 to 2016 and previously worked at the Macau University of Science and Technology from 2009 to 2013. Throughout his career, he has examined the impacts of communication technologies—starting with the internet and extending through social and mobile media to contemporary AI systems—on how people encounter information, form judgments, and engage in transitions. His work focuses on how evolving communication environments shape fundamental processes of attention, interpretation, and influence. A consistent theme in his scholarship examines how emerging technologies transform communication practices, offering new perspectives on human cognition and behavior. His research spans several areas, including computational social science, health communication, audience behavior, and political communication. He is currently the Editor-in-Chief of Human Communication Research and has served as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Communication. He co-edited special issues for various journals and is a co-founder and inaugural chair of the Computational Methods Division of the International Communication Association.
