Biography

Winston Husbands has a diverse background in health research, particularly focusing on Black communities within the context of structural disadvantage. His early involvement in health initiatives began in the mid-1990s when he volunteered with the Black Coalition Against AIDS, subsequently taking up significant roles including Director of Research for the AIDS Committee of Toronto. He became a Senior Scientist at the Ontario HIV Treatment Network, retiring in 2021, and has played a pivotal role as a co-chair of the African Caribbean Council on HIV/AIDS in Ontario and the Interim Committee for HIV Black Canadian Communities. His research interests span various aspects of health and well-being among Black Canadian communities, emphasizing community-based and self-determined approaches to health promotion. His work has examined critical issues like sexual health and structural violence, and he has contributed to numerous impactful publications addressing everyday racism and health policy. His honors include the CAHR-CANFAR Excellence in HIV Research Award for Community-based Research in 2018, demonstrating his commitment to strengthening responses to HIV in Black communities.
