Biography

Wolfgang de Melo is a University Lecturer in Classical Philology at the University of Oxford. His primary research interests encompass Latin linguistics with a focus on aspects such as phonology, metre, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. He teaches subjects including Latin, Greek philology, and Indo-European linguistics, and has a particular interest in morphosyntactic typology. Currently on research leave supported by the Leverhulme Trust (Major Research Fellowship, MRF-2022-031), he is dedicating this time to writing a book that addresses syntactic problems in the works of Plautus and Terence. He is expected to return from leave in MT 2026, during which he will be open to taking new doctoral students, particularly those specializing in early Latin. De Melo has authored several significant publications, including "Early Latin Verb System: Archaic Forms in Plautus and Terence" (OUP 2007), the "Plautus: Comedies" in the Loeb Classical Library series (5 volumes, HUP 2011-13), and "Varro: De lingua Latina; Introduction, Text, Translation, Commentary" (2 volumes, OUP 2019). His forthcoming work includes "Latin Linguistics: Introduction" (De Gruyter 2024).
