Biography

Professor Wolfgang Weisser's research focuses on ecological interactions among organisms and the consequences of these interactions for populations, communities, and ecosystems. His work at the Chair of Terrestrial Ecology emphasizes investigating the impacts of human land use on biodiversity and the development of sustainable land use strategies. His research is distinguished by a strong fieldwork component and the predominant use of insects as model organisms. Professor Weisser studied biology and mathematics at the Universities of Giessen and Bayreuth, earning his doctorate from the Department of Zoology at the University of Oxford in 1994. Following a postdoctoral fellowship, he had positions at Imperial College London and the University of Basel. In 1999, he became a Professor of Terrestrial Ecology at Friedrich Schiller University Jena, and in 2011, he was appointed to the TUM Chair of Terrestrial Ecology.
