Biography

Wouter J. Hanegraaff studied classical guitar and Cultural History specializing in alternative religious movements at the University of Utrecht, completing his dissertation in 1995 with distinction. He was appointed a full professor of History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents at the University of Amsterdam in 1999. Hanegraaff served as president of the Dutch Society for the Study of Religion and the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism. He is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. His research interests include the Western esoteric tradition and its manifestations in contemporary culture. Hanegraaff has published numerous works exploring the relationship between esotericism and popular beliefs, as well as the historical development of these traditions. He has edited and contributed to various scholarly publications, aiming to elucidate the complexities of esoteric phenomena, including gnosticism and hermetism. His role in establishing the academic field of Western esotericism is widely recognized, and he continues to lead research efforts within this domain.
