Biography

Xavier Maeder is a group leader in the field of nano-analyses at the Empa, specializing in the mechanics of materials and nanostructures. He holds a PhD from the University of Mainz, awarded in 2007, after completing his studies in geoscience at the University of Lausanne. His research expertise includes electron and X-ray diffraction techniques as well as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), focused ion beam (FIB), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for micro- and nano-analyses. His academic career includes a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Utrecht, studying microstructure and deformation mechanisms in highly deformed limestone. He joined Empa in 2008 after completing another postdoctoral term at CSEM Neuchâtel, where he engaged in applied projects related to microsystems coatings utilizing advanced X-ray diffraction techniques. In 2011, he accepted an assistant position at the University of Lausanne, focusing on the deformation mechanisms within shear zones. His current research interests center on situ characterization using SEM and TEM.
