Dr. Xi Song

Biography

Xi Song is the Schiffman Family Presidential Professor at the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Sociology. He specializes in sociology with a focus on social mobility, work occupations, and Asian American studies. His research examines the intricacies of occupational restructuring in the U.S. and its implications for future work, diving into patterns and determinants that influence career progression, including job changes and earnings over life courses. Notably, he has developed a new occupational percentile rank measure that accounts for shifts in occupational structure over time. His pivotal project also investigates the historical origins of the 'Model Minority' narrative among Asian Americans, addressing educational and labor market outcomes, as well as intergenerational mobility during the Asian Exclusion Period. Xi has employed advanced quantitative methodologies, including Markov chain models, to unravel complex familial dynamics and the preservation of economic advantages across generations. He has received numerous accolades for his work, including the 2021 William Julius Wilson Early Career Award from the American Sociological Association.
