Biography

Xia Gao received his B.A. and M.S. in Fashion Design from Donghua University (formerly China Textile University) and an MFA in Textile Design from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Gao is a visual artist and designer who primarily works with fibers and textiles, creating 2D and 3D installations. His work addresses personal, cultural, and societal adaptation and transformation. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Art and Art History at Michigan State University. Before joining MSU, he held faculty positions at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Donghua University in Shanghai, China. Gao has guest lectured and presented at various academic conferences and has exhibited widely in numerous juried group shows and solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally. His work has been featured in influential fiber and textile art venues, including “Everyone Table-Miniartextil 2015” in Como, Italy, the “Love Lace” exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, Australia, and the “6th World Textile Art Biennial-Air” at the Anahuacalli Museum in Mexico City, among others. Gao's artwork has also been included in the book “Exploring Fiber Art” and featured in periodicals such as Fiber Art, Surface Design Journal, and Textile Forum. His creations reflect a dialogue between past and present, East and West, and explore the interplay between nature and culture through a transcultural perspective.
