Biography

Xiaohua Gong is a Professor in the Department of Optometry at the University of California, Berkeley. His research focuses on the experimental tools of genetics, molecular and cellular biology, biochemistry, and tissue engineering to investigate the underlying mechanisms of eye growth, disease development, and the process of forming clear images. His current research topics include studying lens development and cataract formation, where he examines the functional roles of intercellular gap junction channels, genetic factors, and signaling molecules in these processes. Additionally, Professor Gong’s work on the regulation of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) seeks to understand the factors contributing to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the leading cause of blindness in the Western world, through the maintenance of regenerating RPE. He also explores signal transduction in retinal choroidal endothelial cells and the roles of surface receptors in retinal angiogenesis. Professor Gong aims to provide innovative approaches for delaying age-related cataracts and developing novel methods to maintain retinal health.
