Biography

Xiaohui Zhang’s research sits at the intersection of urban studies, migration, and informal public space, with a particular focus on how marginalized groups—especially elderly rural migrants—negotiate, adapt, and remake urban environments in contemporary China. The doctoral project explores the everyday strategies these groups use in informal performances to claim space, build community, and maintain cultural identity amidst rapid urban transformation. Broader interests include spatial justice, urban ageing, migration mobility, material culture, and the relationship between urban informality and new approaches to public space design. Xiaohui has practical experience collaborating with the Institute of Architectural Design and Cultural Real Estate at Tsinghua University and has participated in co-design and implementation of temporary street theatre installations during the Jinan Intangible Cultural Heritage Quyi Week, as well as street park renovation projects.
