Biography

Professor Xiaowei Zhao is the director of the EPSRC Supergen Network Plus on Artificial Intelligence and Renewable Energy, and co-director of the EPSRC Supergen Offshore Renewable Energy Hub. He is a member of the Science Expert Group for the UK Government's Department of Energy Security and Net Zero and a finalist for the inaugural Manchester Prize in 2024, a prestigious award recognizing breakthroughs in artificial intelligence for public good. He earned his PhD in Control Theory from Imperial College London in 2010 and worked as a postdoctoral researcher in the Control Engineering Group at the University of Oxford until 2013. In 2018, he joined the University of Warwick as a Professor of Control Engineering. His primary research areas include control theory, machine learning applications in offshore renewable energy systems, energy storage, smart grids, and autonomous systems. He has held numerous grants, with a total project value exceeding £40 million, and founded the Intelligent Control & Smart Energy research group, overseeing 20 PhD students and postdoctoral researchers across multiple advanced laboratories.
