Professor Zhu focuses on signal processing, data science, and earth observation. His research emphasizes the indispensable role of geoinformation derived from satellite data in scientific and governmental planning tasks. As Earth observation enters the Big Data era with the advent of ESA's Sentinel satellites and NewSpace companies, Professor Zhu develops explorative signal processing and machine learning algorithms, including compressive sensing and deep learning, to improve the information retrieval of remote sensing data. His work aims to enable breakthroughs in geoscientific and environmental research, particularly through the fusion of petabytes of earth observation data to tackle challenges in mapping global urbanization. He studied aerospace engineering in China and at TUM, receiving his doctorate in 2011 and postdoctoral teaching qualification (habilitation) in 2013. Since then, he has led a Helmholtz junior research group at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and TUM and has held visiting scholar positions in Italy, China, and Japan. Professor Zhu was appointed as a professor at TUM in 2018 and now heads the EO Data Science department at DLR.
