Biography

Dr. Bao’s research includes utilizing quantum nonlinear effects in optical fibers for developing optical phase polarization amplifiers, ultra-weak signal detection, and quantum sensing. His work in optical signal processing involves creating instrumentation to characterize laser dynamics, noise properties, and optical network security monitoring. In addition, he specializes in ultrasound transmitters and acoustic/optic micro-cavities, and is engaged in distributed fiber birefringence measurement and data storage using specialty fibers. His group is focused on designing and fabricating structured fibers, nano-fibers based interferometers, and random fiber grating sensing probes to measure temperature, strain, vibration, and birefringence. Dr. Bao is also developing low noise fiber lasers and multi-parameter laser sensors, as well as focusing on non-destructive testing and distributed fiber sensor technologies for infrastructure monitoring and real-time event detection, aiming to preemptively identify internal structural deformations or hot spots. His research interests encompass Experimental Photonics, Nonlinear Effects in Optical Fibers, Temperature Measurement, Acoustic Wave Detection, Vibration Analysis, Birefringence Studies, and Bio-Chemical Sensing, leading to advancements in optical signal processing and data storage.
