Professor XiaoYu Wu’s research group, Greener Production @ Waterloo combines expertise in thermal science, material engineering, and techno-economics to develop sustainable technologies for energy conversion and chemical production. His group employs experimental and numerical methods to develop a fundamental understanding of thermodynamics and kinetics of processes. His interest in thermo-electro-chemical processes aims to maximize system versatility. Kinetics and reaction mechanisms are obtained through high-throughput benchtop reactors and physical models. System-scaled numerical analysis is utilized to investigate optimal operating conditions for energy-chemical integration, while techno-economic assessments are conducted to evaluate costs. The findings from this research accelerate material development, optimize processes, and facilitate the commercialization of technologies with the goal of utilizing renewable resources to enhance global living standards. Prior to his appointment at the University of Waterloo, XiaoYu was a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he also obtained his Ph.D. He has published papers in journals such as Progress in Energy and Combustion Science, Proceedings of the Combustion Institute, AIChE Journal, and ChemSusChem. He serves as a Guest Associate Editor for the open-access journal Frontiers in Energy Research, focusing on the theme collection “Sustainable Hydrogen Energy and Fuel Commodity Applications.”
