Biography

Dr. Xiaying Xin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at Queen’s University, specializing in environmental science engineering. Her research is centered on emerging contaminants, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), flame retardants, micro- and nanoplastics, and pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs). Dr. Xin investigates the monitoring, fate, transport, and toxicological impacts of these contaminants on water, wastewater, soil environments, and drinking water distribution systems. She is recognized as an emerging leader in nanobubble technology for water treatment and soil remediation, contributing significantly to this innovative and growing field. Her interdisciplinary research bridges environmental chemical engineering, environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, and microbiology. Dr. Xin is dedicated to advancing cost-effective, energy-efficient, and climate-resilient treatment solutions that support communities in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs). Before joining Queen's University, she served as a Research Assistant Professor at the State Key Laboratory of Marine Pollution, City University of Hong Kong, and worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She earned her PhD in Environmental Systems Engineering from the University of Regina in Canada and holds a BSc in Environmental Science from Yangzhou University, China.
