Xile Hu was born in 1978 in Putian, southeastern China. He entered Peking University in 1996, where he studied chemistry, and later pursued his doctoral studies at the University of California, San Diego, completing his Ph.D. in December 2004. Following his graduation, Hu worked as a postdoctoral scholar at the California Institute of Technology, where he enjoyed lively discussions and formed numerous friendships. In 2007, after visiting Switzerland, he decided to move to the country and join the faculty of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). At EPFL, he directs the Laboratory of Inorganic Synthesis Catalysis and focuses on developing sustainable chemistry and synthesis methods, particularly in the field of energy sustainability. Hu's work has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the IUPAC-Zhejiang NHU International Award for Green Chemistry in 2023 and the Swiss Green & Sustainable Chemistry Award in 2021. His contributions to the field have also earned him fellowships and memberships in esteemed scientific societies such as Academia Europaea and the European Academy of Sciences.
