Xili Duan joined the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2014. Prior to this, he was a resident engineer at Siemens Energy from 2012 to 2014, focusing on combustion testing and thermal design of combustor components for gas turbines. He earned his bachelor's degree in thermal energy power engineering from China University of Petroleum in 1999 and continued his graduate research there, obtaining a master's degree in chemical process machinery in 2002. Subsequently, he was offered a faculty position as a lecturer, teaching thermal fluid courses while engaging in research projects aimed at developing gas burners and high efficiency heat exchangers. In 2004, Duan moved to Canada to pursue his PhD at the University of Manitoba, where he studied ground heat transfer and thermal protection of power transmission foundations affected by seasonal freezing and thawing. He completed his PhD in mechanical engineering in 2009, receiving an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship the same year. His postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) involved boiling heat transfer and multiphase flow in power generation systems. He has published extensively, contributing to one book chapter and over 120 research papers in thermal fluid energy areas. Xili Duan is also a Fellow of the Canadian Society for Mechanical Engineering (CSME) and has received several awards, including the Terra Nova Young Innovator Award in 2019.
