Biography

Professor Xin Liu received a B.S. in Physics from Tsinghua University in 2004 and a Ph.D. in Astrophysical Sciences from Princeton University in 2010, under the guidance of Professor Michael Strauss. He joined the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2015, having previously been a NASA Einstein Fellow and a Hubble Fellow at Princeton University. His research interests include astronomical survey data science, multi-messenger time-domain astrophysics, and the application of artificial intelligence in scientific research. Recently, his work has focused on analyzing large volumes of astronomical data, which introduces both challenges and opportunities for modern astronomy. Liu's research emphasizes the integration of machine learning methodologies within astrophysical analysis, seeking to enhance the interpretability, accuracy, and robustness of ML models applied in astronomy. Liu has been recognized as a Norman P. Jones Professorial Scholar for the years 2023-2026, has been ranked highly as an excellent teacher by students, and is a faculty fellow at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).
